epidemic pleurodynia n an acute epidemic form of pleurisy characterized by sudden onset with fever, headache, and acute diaphragmatic pain and caused by various coxsackieviruses (esp. serotypes of species Human enterovirus B) called also Bornholm disease, devil's-grip

an acute infectious disease, generally occurring in epidemics among persons under age 20, caused by infection with group A coxsackieviruses or other enteroviruses. The most striking characteristic is sudden sharp paroxysmal pain in the chest over the ribs or in the upper abdomen, which can last for days and is accompanied by fever. There are often relapses after asymptomatic periods. Called also Bornholm disease and epidemic myalgia.
