- blocking antibody n an antibody that combines with an antigen without visible reaction but prevents another antibody from later combining with or producing its usual effect on that antigen called also incomplete antibody
* * *any antibody that by combining with an antigen blocks another immunologic reaction with the antigen. In most patients, immunotherapy (hyposensitization or desensitization) for allergic disorders induces IgG blocking antibodies that can bind the allergen and prevent it from binding to cell-fixed IgE, triggering immediate hypersensitivity; it can thus induce partial immunologic tolerance. Blocking antibodies directed against tumor-specific antigens have been suggested as one mechanism allowing tumors to escape immune surveillance. Blocking antibodies can prevent agglutination in serologic tests (see incomplete a.).
