* * *stereotaxic surgery any of several techniques for the production of sharply circumscribed lesions in specific areas of pathologic tissue in deep-seated structures. The site to be worked on is localized with three-dimensional coordinates; precise images are obtained with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. An arc guidance system may be used to direct an electrode or other lesion-producing instrument. Methods of producing lesions include heat, cold, x-rays, charged particles such as protons, and ultrasound. Called also stereotaxy.
