ac·e·tyl co·en·zyme A (asґə-təl) (as″ə-tēlґ ko-enґzīm) acetyl CoA, a thioester of coenzyme A and acetic acid, the acetyl groups being derived from carbohydrates, fatty acids, and amino acids. Acetyl CoA can enter the tricarboxylic acid cycle, can be used to acetylate numerous compounds, and can be a precursor of steroids and other isoprenoid compounds. Excess acetyl coenzyme A may be converted to fats for storage or may appear as ketone bodies.
