ura·cil (ūrґə-sil) a pyrimidine base, in animal cells usually occurring condensed with ribose to form the ribonucleoside uridine, a component of ribonucleic acid and of free nucleotides with functions in metabolism. The corresponding deoxyribonucleoside, deoxyuridine, is a component of free nucleotides involved in pyrimidine biosynthesis. See illustration of purine and pyrimidine bases, under base. Symbol U.
