ul·tra·son·ics (ul″trə-sonґiks) the study and use of ultrasonic waves; these could include any frequencies above 20 kHz, but the term is usually restricted to those above 500 kHz. Such waves are injurious to living tissue because of their thermal effects, but controlled doses may be used therapeutically to break down pathologic tissue or diagnostically in ultrasonography.
