pe·riph·er·in (pə-rifґər-in) 1. a 57-kD protein that polymerizes to form intermediate fibers found in neurons of the peripheral nervous system. a 2. glycoprotein found on the rim region of the membranous disks of the outer segments of the retinal rods, thought to be involved in the assembly, orientation, and stability of the disks; mutations in the gene encoding it can cause retinitis pigmentosa or macular dystrophy.
