A cholesterol-lowering agent, isolated from a strain of Aspergillus terreus, that reduces both normal and elevated serum cholesterol. SYN: mevinolin.

lo·va·stat·in (loґvə-stat″in) [USP] an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, which can lower plasma levels of cholesterol and raise the plasma level of high-density lipoprotein C (HDL-C); used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and other forms of dyslipidemia and to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality associated with atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease; administered orally.
