- A toxic principle isolated from the seed of the cotton plant (Gossypium) that reduces sperm count; used in China as an oral male contraceptive.

gos·sy·pol (gosґə-pol) [Gossypium + -ol] a poisonous yellow pigment, found in cottonseed and detoxified by heating; it has male antifertility properties, apparently having its effects in the seminiferous tubules. Gossypol poisoning (q.v.) occurs when cottonseed cakes containing excessive gossypol are fed to pigs.
