ejection period

the second phase of ventricular systole, being the period intervening between the opening and closing of the semilunar valves, during which the blood is being discharged into the aortic and pulmonary arteries. It can be divided into an initial period of rapid ejection followed by a period of reduced ejection as aortic and ventricular pressures decline from their peaks. Called also ejection phase and sphygmic p. See illustration at cardiac cycle, under cycle.
