cutaneous myiasis

1. infestation of an animal by maggots, found in areas of thick hair or wool and on nearby skin, usually when the area is chronically wet or fouled by feces or urine. Sheep are particularly susceptible, and serious cases may result in skin breakdown and death. The maggots are usually larvae of Phaenicia, Phormia, Chrysomyia, or Calliphora species. Several different types are distinguished according to the part of the body infested; see under strike. 2. cutaneous larva migrans in humans caused by fly larvae. Called also dermatomyiasis and m. linearis.
