- An enzyme that cleaves phenol sulfates, including cerebroside sulfates ( i.e., a phenol sulfate + H2O → a phenol + sulfate anion). Some arylsulfatases are inhibited by sulfate (type II) and some are not (type I). SYN: sulfatase (2).

ar·yl·sul·fa·tase (ar″əl-sulґfə-tās) [EC 3.1.6.1] any of a group of enzymes of the hydrolase class that catalyze the cleavage of sulfate residues from sulfate esters; physiological substrates are generally sulfolipids or sulfated polysaccharides, while in vitro substrates include aryl or alkyl sulfates. Called also sulfatase.
