al·dose (alґdōs) one of two subgroups of monosaccharides, being those having a terminal carbonyl (aldehyde) group; it is further subdivided on the basis of the number of carbon atoms in the sugar; see aldotetrose, aldopentose, aldohexose, etc. Examples are glucose, galactose, and mannose.
